Notes

Description
The Teachings booklets were compiled at several work sessions held during the year 2000 by people from various departments working with the Jicarilla language. The Group's desire was to create Jicarilla materials and make it available for young people in the schools and community. It was prepared to encourage other Jicarilla Speakers to produce written Jicarilla materials and to assist in maintaining the language. The Teachings, historically were passed from one generation of Jicarilla Elders to another until today, very few fluent speakers, approximately 30%, are left to pass on the language. This situation only strengthens the resolve to do everything possible to preserve the Jicarilla language. The Teachings booklets can aid youngsters and old alike in gaining an appreciation of one facet of the Jicarilla culture. All of the teachings contain moral and useful advice for everyday life.
