Maddy Aldridge, a young woman struggling to make ends meet during the Great Depression, opens an illegal speakeasy with Jeffers Grimm, however, Jeffers made a deal with the mob to bring alcohol across the Canadian border and store it in the speakeasy, and this activity draws the attention of the federal police.
